For Immediate Release

Rise Above Bursaries for Single Parents (“Rise Above”) will now be issuing bursaries three times each year to better meet the needs of single parent students in Winnipeg. The Winnipeg charity, founded in 2016, has already distributed over $50,000 in bursaries to single parents pursuing a post-secondary education. Five bursaries of $3,500 ($17,500 total) were distributed in 2021 alone.

Alex, one of five recipients in 2021, is passionate about making a difference in her community. “I would like to work with vulnerable women and children possibly at a center in the community,” she wrote in her application. “I believe that we need more indigenous social workers that can advocate for these families and work to achieve reunification and healthier families and communities.” Alex is pursing a degree in social work.

To qualify for a Rise Above bursary, recipients must be attending, or applying to attend, an accredited post-secondary institution in Winnipeg; reside within Manitoba; have sole/primary custody of their child(ren); exhibit financial need; and be recognized as a full time student by their institution. Applications are made available at www.riseabovebursaries.ca in the winter for May bursaries, spring for September bursaries and fall for January bursaries. The number of recipients is determined by donations received and may vary from year to year.
